2005
ImageIt’s well known : it needs more than bad weather to discourage fans coming to the Festival. The proof is that the 39th edition of this festival has been brilliant. More than 220’000 visitors came to Montreux between 1st and 16th July. The four concert halls have welcomed near to 96’000 people.

The Auditorium Stravinski itself welcomed 52’000 people. The festival starts with a celtic evening with “The Corrs” and the new fashion of the English pop music James Blunt.

During those 16 days one could listen to Robert Cray Band, Solomon Burke and the Master of the blues B.B. King. But also the four members of Apocaliptica and the metal-glam Alice Cooper or the young and charming Emiliana Torrini or even the mythic Crosby, Stills & Nash. But also Robert Botos, Oscar Peterson Quartet, Craig David or the acid Jazz Incognito.

But this is not all. The Cuban music has not been forgotten with the kind and nice looking old guy Ibrahim Ferrer who unfortunately left us a few weeks later.

At the Miles Davis, not  less than 45 bands played, every evening different musical styles and lots of interesting discoveries. Salsa, electro with Death In Vegas or Reggae with a legend by name Barrington Levy. One unforgettable evening with the Young Gods offering to the public their light and sound show or Seul Jorge and Tom Zé for a brasilian night.

Funk music with Jack Splash leader of The Plantlife., The furious And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Isis and Audioslave and in a complete other style of music : Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare or the fifth Element Cres and DJ Asher Selector at the Miles Davis.

At the Casino the program was also very various. Great voices as Marianne Faithfull, Tori Amos, Juliette Gréco, Lisa Stansfield or Michel Jonasz have given to the public some amazing evenings. One must not forget the exceptional show of Bobby McFerrin alone on the stage or with Fazil Say or Joe Sample. Some Jazz icons on stage : McCoy Tyner, Steps Ahead, Jean Luc Ponty-Stanley Clarke-Bela Fleck, Georges Duke . A Cuban evening with Chucho Valdes and Arturo Sandoval.

The Montreux Jazz Festival also has lots of outside activities. Jazz trains or boats attracting 5’700 visitors or the Montreux Happy Hour Jazz with free concerts, Under the Sky with 78 bands playing around, workshops, fairs, lots of activities for everyone. The Montreux Jazz Young Planet for kids to meet, play, talk and for them to party in another way.
