29th edition. Thanks to low-price entrance tickets, the Festival celebrates another record attendance: 78,000 tickets have been sold for the different shows, and about 150,000 festival visitors ! New welcoming facilities (shuttle-buses, the re-designed Montreux Jazz Café, the collaboration with the Casino, DJs during the week-end and musical afternoons on the terrace and at the pool) have a great success. The second « Bahia Boat » now has a little brother, the « Memphis Boat », and the numerous workshops are very attractive. The programme shows a lot of hot highlights: African Nights (Baba Maal, Salif Keita, Cheb Mami, Youssou N'Dour, Malcolm Braff & Farafina), some very catchy ska and Cuban nights, and some great moments of groove and emotion with the performances of George Clinton, Olodum, James Taylor Quartet, Guru's Jazzmatazz, Marianne Faithfull, Van Morrison, Ska night with The Specials, Ice T, Morphine, Jamiroquai, James Brown, Chaka Khan, B.B. King, Lucky Peterson, Randy Weston, James Brown, Tony Bennett, Gary Moore, Jimmy Smith or John McLaughlin and his new band Free Spirits, Joe Henderson, Dr John, Wild Magnolias, Jacky Terrasson, All 4 One, Manhattan Transfer or James Carter and Joan Armatrading among others. For the first time the Montreux Jazz Festival will be connected to the Internet. All information, program, biographies and photos of artists, ordering tickets, selling posters etc are available on the WEB from July 1. The poster has been designed by David Bowie.
