ImageMilton Glaser designs the poster of the 10th anniversary of the Montreux Jazz Festival. Over 100 vinyls recorded in Montreux can now be found in various record stores over the world. Mountain Studios, being part of the new Casino, offers 24-track recording facilities to musicians and attracts many groups as for instance the Rolling Stones who came to Montreux to record their « Black and Blue » album. The festival adds some more days to the calendar ! What a wonderful thing ! June 25 to July 11, the program starts with Folk music. Leonard Cohen, Ralph McTell, The Dubliners, Sarclon or Zachary Richard. Interesting Blues and Soul evenings with The Meters, Luther Allison, Sammy Price, The Crusaders with Larry Carlton, Jimmy Witherspoon, Stuff (Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale guitars, Richard Tee keyboards, Gordon Edwards bass and Steve Gadd drums), Eric Burdon and Frankie Miller play this same evening. Al Jarreau, for the first time in Montreux, got all his band’s equipment stuck at the airport. The result was that Al Jarreau  stepped on stage only accompanied by his pianist. Standing ovation for a brilliant performance.  Impressive list of artists present for this Montreux Jazz edition : George Duke, Billy Cobham, John Scofield and Alphonso Johnson together on stage for a smashing performance, Indian style experience with Shakti….John McLaughlin and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. Pasadena Roof Orchestra, and probably one of the best Jazz Fusion bands Weather Report with Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Manola Badrena and Alyandro Acuna. Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Jazz Rock with Klaus Doldinger’s Passport, Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra Arkestra pioneer of electronic music, space music and free improvisation regardless of genre, with an extensive use of electronic keyboards. 18 musicians and 3 dancers on stage this music touches on virtually the entire history of Jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz. This Montreux concert has been recorded on a double vinyl. Stan Getz, Thad Jones, The Monty Alexander Trio, Sarah Vaughan have all been part of this edition.
