1974
ImageFifteen days of music from June 28 until July 7. Large diversity in the musical style : Blues, Gospel, Soul, Rock, Pop and, of course, Jazz. Africa is represented by Randy Weston and Brasil by Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento, Flora Purim, Wagner Tiso and Ron Carter. Muddy Waters and his musicians, Junior Wells & Buddy Guy fill the concert hall with Blues notes, Terry Taylor, Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones) and Dallas Taylor too.  Great Jazz stars with names like Gil Evans, Earl Hines, Helen Humes, Jay McShann, Sonny Rollins, Van Morrison, Larry Coryell and the Eleventh House, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Soft Machine, Cecil Taylor, Billy Cobham plays with the Brecker Brothers and John Abercrombie to name a few. The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin and Jean-Luc Ponty is the revelation of this edition. The band was a collective of eleven outstanding players, including three- piece string and wind sections that allowed the group to tackle the music from Apocalypse with some reverence while being a more practical touring unit.  The 1974 Montreux Jazz edition is marked by the death of Gene Ammons present in Montreux last year.
